European Facebook user figures
A few days after I’ve reviewed Facebook’s market leader status in Europe and found an impressive dominance in a majority of European countries, O’Reilly released user figures for Europe yesterday. I’ve combined those figures with total population of each country obtained from World Factbook to be able to interpret them in relation to total inhabitants.

It shows that percentage in those countries where Facebook leads the market are unsurpringsingly higher with an average of 18,5% over 2,79% for those countries where other social networks are stronger. The growth rate of the last 12 weeks is an impressive 47,66% average for Facebook-led countries and 96,24% average for other countries.
Location in O’Reilly data is declaredly based on IP address which can for example explain the whopping 50% in Luxembourg where many employees live in the surrounding countries but are counted for Luxembourg whenever they access Facebook at their workplace.
It can be noted that reach is lower than average in countries with a fierce competition where Facebook just recently overtook the lead like France, Spain or Austria. Furthermore these figures do not take into account internet penetration in those countries which explains the low figures for example in Bulgaria where the internet is not as commonly used as in Western European countries.
